Welsh Bodyboard Club Jam 2017

Wales' Bodyboarders congregate for the 2017 Welsh Bodyboard Club Jam.

Last Saturday (16 September 2017) the WBC’s Autumn Jam was held in challenging 2ft clean conditions on Llangennith beach, South Wales. After a chilly 9:30am meet in the car park the competitors made their way to the north end of the beach where 1-2ft wedgey peaks were starting to emerge. The competitors were split into two 30 minute heats, followed by a repercharge and a 5 man final. We started promptly to ensure that the competitors got the best out of the conditions.

Round one saw some tight pocket spins from Keith Usher and some solid rolls from Dave Collett mean that they progressed comfortably into the final 5 man final. In round 2 Mark Griffiths linked up some smooth combos - somehow managing to link 2 spins and a roll on a ½ foot section to finish first in the heat! Not to be outdone, Alex Clark was hot on his heels with a series of linking manoeuvres of his own which saw him finishing in second.

The repercharge round was a quick 10 minute heat allowing the knocked out competitors to have a 2nd throw of the dice. Steve McDonald made the most of the opportunity and confidently landed a roll on a challenging section, meaning he went through to the final.

The final saw Keith Usher, David Collett, Alex Clark, Mark Griffiths and Steve McDonald face off in the weakening 2ft conditions. David Collett set a high standard by launching a large projected roll from a closeout section to impress the judges. Alex Clark and Keith Usher each combined some nifty pocket manoeuvre combos to stay within touching distance. However, the confident riding and combos of Mark Griffiths were a force to be reckoned with and he bust out a couple of solid spin/ roll combos which couldn’t be equalled, giving him first place. In the weakening swell nobody could match his lead with Dave Collett’s impressive roll landing him second place and Keith’s smooth pocket spins meant he just pipped Alex to third.

After the prizes were awarded the contestants retreated to the warmth of the Kings Head pub for some hard earned refreshments! Big thanks to all who made it down and the sponsors who make these events possible.

Keep your eyes peeled for future events on our Facebook page and Twitter feed.

Welsh Bodyboard Club 2017 Plans

As part of our continual support to grassroots sports in Wales, we like to keep up to date with those which we sponsor and endorse. After hearing the Welsh Bodyboard Club were gathering to make an action plan for 2017, we couldn't wait to find out what they've got planned to keep their members busy this year!

After a recent meeting of the committee of the Welsh Bodyboard Club we have planned an action packed year for our members!

Firstly to kick things off and between now and the end of winter we are holding a 'Wave Of The Winter Competition'. This competition is for Wales based boogers. It could be a local wave in to you or somewhere abroad, but it has to have been during the 2016-2017 winter period. Entries end 31st of March. The winner will win a pair of fins and will win by the amount of likes the picture gets on our facebook page. The more likes the more chance of winning!

Put this date in your diaries as we are holding a camping event down at Hillend Campsite, Llangennith, Gower. The plan is to rock up have a fun Jam which could be held anywhere on the Gower with Beers and BBQ afterwards. All welcome but you have to be a member to join in with the Jam. The event is a non competitive atmosphere and the aim is just to get people together and have a good time. Cost of Entry to the Jam will be posted closer to the time. Prizes to be won!

We are looking to book a weekend at Surf Snowdonia on the 16/09/17. We plan on staying in the pods on site with a surf on the Saturday afternoon and a surf on the Sunday morning. Prices are £125 for a pod that sleeps 4 and 2 surfs. We’d need to get this booked in pretty sharp as the place gets busy quick so please get in touch if interested. Minimum of 4 people for this to take place.

The club will continue with membership and the cost of being a part of it is £5 per year or £10 with a t-shirt and stickers. Membership will now run from 1st April until 31st March. By supporting the club and becoming a member you are supporting bodyboarding in Wales as well as discounts to events and exclusive discounts from some of our sponsors.

We will continue to support members and encourage entry to the Welsh Surf Federation Nationals event along with events of the British Bodyboard Club. As the club has an interest in Flowboarding we also look to support riders who wish to take part in the CIWW Flowboarding Comp’.

Between now and our first planned event we will be looking at organising meet ups for a surf if anyone is interested. We won’t be taking big groups to sensitive spots but will be looking to go for a surf at places like Rest Bay or Llangennith. Its just to get people together for a surf. There is also a possibility of a Jam being called at short notice if we see a decent weekend swell and have the committee members available to run it.

If you made it this far then thanks for reading and we hope to see you at some of the events this year!
